Disconnected

3rd post from the Puente de la Mujer series...

This is one of my favorite photos, and one of the best in this series. I love getting up close to this kind of detail, and seeing all these intimacies that you don't notice when you just walk by. In this case I love seeing how the steel was cut, what the weather has been like recently, and the wear and tear...

Ghost

3rd photo from Recoleta Cemetary.

It's someone you just met, but seem to have known for a long time.

Someone you only have an outline of, but the detail seems so real.

An empty space stands between you, filled with promises but drained of life.

Only echoes of his presence remain in this tomb.

You are haunted by his absence from your view.

Though not dead, he is a ghost.

Recoleta Tomb

I have many photos from Recoleta Cemetary in downtown Buenos Aires. This is the second.

Bars hold us back, and also keep things contained. The key is knowing when you are being kept safe from something, or knowing when you are being held back.

Generations

I have many photos from Recoleta Cemetary. This is the first.

I think of light and darkness in cemetaries. This was especially apt on the day I was there---strong sun illuminating the inevitable doom of us all. It's black and white, the lines that make our coffins, showing our lives' beginnings and ends. So many of us gone.

Edge of Uruguay

Travelers sometimes end up somewhere unexpectedly. You may intend to visit a historic village in Uruguay, called Colonia, for instance, only to find yourself there with no toothbrush and no change of clothes for an overnight stay. You feel like you're out on the edge of the world, so far from home, so far from the comforts you brought with you, and the only thing you have is your traveling companion. A touch of detail on a new, blank canvas.

Overlooking Plaza Republica del Paraguay

My friend Scott decided to go join our team in Argentina fairly last minute. Luckily, I had contacted the apartment rental folks in order to extend my reservation, and I asked them if they could find a place for him last minute. The bastard ended up with the nicest place amongst us, even though it was about 6 blocks away from everyone else. He had a giant bed (queen, compared to our tiny twins), a lovely shower, plus a bar and a deck. The deck overlooked a little park outside, and since his place was on the corner of the building, it had a great view.

I Just Met A Girl Named Maria...

After I left the locutorio (the internet cafe), I walked down along Puerreydon street towards the water. It was Día de los Estudiantes (Day of the Students---apparently they get the spring solstice off since it was September 21st). Students were everywhere in the parks. Hanging out, smoking certain substances, lots of wine bottles strewn about. I walked around, through a design mall (a cross between Elm Street, Ikea and an airport terminal) and after watching the gymnasts trying to outperform each other on the lawn, I ended up outside Recoleta Cemetary. This is where our scene begins...

EXT. RECOLETA CEMETARY - BUENOS AIRES

A bewildered-looking blond tourist, dressed in "LUCKY" sweatshirt and camera bag with bedraggled hair, walks by the main gate. He is surrounded by EXCITED STUDENTS, who chat rapidly in spanish, dance, drink wine, lie about on the lawns. A young girl in an pink shirt runs up to the tourist.

YOUNG GIRL
(grabs tourist's shoulder, stopping him)
Where are you from?

TOURIST
(under his breath)
Clearly not from here.
(aloud)
I'm from San Francisco.

GROUP OF FRIENDS
SAN FRANCISCO! YAY!

The tourist is surprised to discover a large GROUP OF FRIENDS standing behind the YOUNG GIRL. Clearly they are her posse. The tourist's face lights up in a big smile.

YOUNG GIRL
I am Maria. These are my friends.

TOURIST
(in terrible accent)
Hola, Maria. Me llamo Blake.

GROUP OF FRIENDS
Blake from San Francisco! Yay!

MARIA
Do you like....Maradona?

BLAKE
He is an excellent soccer player!

GROUP OF FRIENDS
Maradona! Yay!

MARIA
Do you like....The Bocas?

BLAKE
Yes! I'm going to see them play on Sunday!

GROUP OF FRIENDS
Bocas! Yay!

MARIA
Do you like --
(pause)
George Bush?

BLAKE
(thumbs down)
Not at all!

GROUP OF FRIENDS
Yay!

MARIA
You are a beautiful man. I am eighteen. How old are you?

BLAKE
(carefully)
Thirty-five.

MARIA
Thirty-five? Really?

BLAKE
Yay!

MARIA
You are very handsome.
(presents her right cheek)
Kiss!

Blake KISSES her right cheek.

MARIA
(presents her left cheek)
Here.

Blake KISSES her left cheek.

MARIA
(touches her lips)
Here.

GROUP OF FRIENDS
(salaciously)
Whoa!

BLAKE
(blushing)
No.

MARIA
(mocking hurt)
Aw! Why not? Am I not beautiful?

BLAKE
But you are eighteen!

The GROUP OF FRIENDS LAUGHS.

MARIA
Welcome to Buenos Aires!

BLAKE
Thank you SO MUCH!

MARIA and her GROUP OF FRIENDS begin to walk away. Blake stands in place, grinning.

Beat.

BLAKE
Wait, wait! Maria! Maria!

One of the trailing group of friends sees Blake and begins to shout her name as well. Maria emerges from the group.

BLAKE
Una photo!

The GROUP OF FRIENDS quickly gathers round Blake and Maria and poses.
